Sometimes when filling up your tanks, the green o ring would get squeeze out from the gap. Even when it doesnt, you open the cap and the o ring is like flaking off or shedding its skins like a snake. It has been used in diesel environments for AGES. It breaks down from heat and ozone more than viton though. For where it is, I would use Buna-N and not think twice. Change it out every filter change. I like the newer silicone o-rings. Much more expensive, and don't swell to stop age leaks, but man they last forever.

They may have machined the groove too deep for the o-ring provided, or the o-ring diameter is too small. Otherwise it should seal without any issues.
